How to Make Matcha
Follow these six simple steps for the perfect ceremonial matcha. No experience needed — just your kit and a few minutes of calm.
Heat Water
Heat fresh water to 70–80°C (160°F). Avoid boiling — too hot and the matcha turns bitter.
Sift 2g of Matcha
Sift 1–2 scoops (about 2 grams) of matcha through a fine strainer into your bowl to remove clumps.
Pour 60–70ml Water
Pour a small amount of hot water over the matcha. About 60–70ml (2 oz) is all you need.
Gently Combine
Start by gently scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl with your chasen to incorporate the powder.
Whisk in Zigzag
Whisk briskly in a “W” or zigzag motion for 1–2 minutes until a light green foam appears on the surface.
Enjoy Your Matcha
Lift the chasen gently from the center. Take a moment to appreciate the colour and aroma. Sip slowly and enjoy.
The Everyday Latte Way
Short on time? You can also make matcha with a handheld frother or blender.
Add 1 tbsp matcha to hot milk or water. Sweeten if desired.
Froth or blend until smooth and creamy.
Drink straight, top with milk, or pour over ice.
